PUDDING MILL LANE

(1996 - 2014)

The station had to be relocated because the area it stood on was needed for the new Crossrail (Elizabeth) line.

One might have thought that it was known that the Crossrail line was planned to go through this area but perhaps not. Or perhaps the uncertainty over whether Crossrail would be given the go-ahead, meant that the expensive extra works to divert the line were not justifiable for a new line that had not yet been authorised.

Demolition of the old station was undertaken rapidly after closure.

Eastward view. At the time of this photo, the area to the right, where the new station was to be built, is still an industrial area.

The tiny entrance to the station, although given the low passenger usage at the time, it didn't require anything bigger.

Eastward view of the progress being made on the new station.
The old station (with a train waiting at the westbound platform) was one of the smallest on the DLR network and the new one is one of the largest.

Looking eastward on the last day of operation for the old station - 17th April 2014 - and an indication of the size of the diversion needed for the new station from the old.

The new station did not open for ten days after the closure of the old one - the time it took to divert the line at each end to the new station and complete the associated signalling works etc.
